4. The social stratification and entrenchment of gender roles has required monumental efforts to even budge, and even now politicans are still getting away with saying things like "women are birth-giving machines"* without substantial criticism from their colleagues in office.

Well, I recently watched an anime known as Girls Bravo... The main character, Yukinari, is picked on girls so much that he developed an allergic reaction to their slightest touch.

Even his best friend, Kiriae or whoever her name is, picks on him for being an accidental peeping tom. Yukinari is then transported through a bath tub and meets a cute girl named Miharu in another world, in which his allergic reaction doesn't activate when Miharu touches him.

I wonder if animes like this is inspired by the darker side of Japanese culture....

Oh, and Exo Squad? That cartoon was well done, but for reasons unknown, didn't last too long. Either that, or I missed a few episodes.....

On the first part, there's no doubt about that. Even in Sailor Moon there are a few throw awaylines about the crushing pressures of Japanese education that were cut from the American release.

I saw mention of the Japanese people having identity crises and gender role issues in a book about anime I read not too long ago.  You ever noticed how most anime characters (not all, but a good deal of them) tend to look similar?  It also explains how they don't always seem to belong to any particular race (for example, in Evangelion, Shinji is supposedly Japanese, while Asuka is supposed to be German; however, there's no significant difference in appearance between them), the use of unnatural hair and eye colors, exaggerated body proportions (tall and lanky, huge eyes, etc.), and male dominance in a lot of hentai (although in some anime - Love Hina, for example - this trend is opposite, with the male, usually a young boy, being oppressed by a usually older and more dominant female character).  Very intriguing...

All my experiences with "Japan is fucked up" comes from seeing clips of their television shows, their commercials, and some of the absolutely bizarre porn they animate or put their porn stars through.

Well, You know, the West has its own problems (The USA has lower social mobility than England of all places, the UK has the worst rich/poor disparity in the industrialized world, France's birthrate has been fucked since WWI, etc.), but I just feel the need to burst anyone's bubble when they say a particular culture is "superior". I'd go after anyone who said that France/Belgium/Russia/Egypt/Whatever is better than whoever else.

The other thing to consider is that for some time all the anime and manga licensed to the US and on the fansub circles have been pretty much the creme of the crop.  This created an illusion of superiority that thankfully is being shattered as more and more anime and manga are being seen in fansub and licensed by companies.

Japan does good stuff.  But then again some of their "great acheivements" in certain genres have also had international influences.  Take Super Sentai series for example, it wasn't until Toei's Spiderman and the involvement of Marvel that brought transforming robots into the genre.  In fact, Battle Fever J was originally going to be a Japanified version of Captain America.  And anime itself has inspiration from Disney.  Also there is Transformers, while yes Hasbro got the toys from Takara and Japan it was America that created the grandoise story line of an intergalactic war between transforming robots.  Japan took this back and effectively crashed it into the ground whereas a nice nostalgia buffer arose in the US.

I couldn't have said it better myself.  Just walk into any manga bookstore or open up any offbrand manga phonebook and it's not hard to find droves and droves of mindless, ugly, and crappy manga.  A lot of crappy anime doesn't see release in the U.S. either, which I think is an advantage to living on this side of the pond.  The majority of the horrible, time killing content has been filtered out, and thankfully, died off and stayed in Japan where it should have.  There's no sense in importing 10 lbs of monkey crap.
