Final Fight series
« on: August 24, 2006, 10:48:25 pm »
Next month Capcom Classics Minimix for GBA comes out,and it will feature Bionic Commando,Strider and Mighty Final Fight for NES,and i was wondering what members here thought of the Final Fight series as a whole.

Final Fight:
The arcade game started it all.It had a cast of wild characters, some of which would later turn up in the Street Fighter Alpha series. The game was not only a beat 'em up,but it felt like a fighter at times.Picking up weapons to bash enemies, food to recover health, this game is still fun for me to this day.Out of the original three heroes,i liked Haggar and Guy best.Haggar didn't take crap from no one and was strong as hell, and Guy was very deadly when the right player took control. It paved the way for the sequels, which featured many elements from the arcade game, and it had some fun bonus rounds.I like that car smashing bonus round alot, seeing the thug cry when he walks up and his ride is smashed!

Final Fight 2:
The Mad Gear gang is back with a new leader!Haggar is back but now with Carlos and Maki. Also making a return from the arcade was Rolento. What i liked about this one was while you had mostly new villians and a new cast of heroes, they kept Haggar around as the common thread, and he is still as powerful as he was in the arcade game.Carlos' swordspin move was cool, and Maki sure loved smacking people around as well.

Final Fight 3:
A new gang named Skull Cross is rioting in the city, just as Guy returns from his training trip to visit Haggar.Add in a street fighter named Dean and a police officer named Lucia, and you get a team of 4 heroes to pick from.FF3 is my current fave,it had a nice cast of heroes, but it also had nice new weapons abilites.Sure, any of the 4 heroes could pick up the metallic club, but only Lucia could do combos with it!Likewise,Guy is the only one who could do combos with the nunchaku. You could also find hidden paths to new levels and alternate routes through the game.Overall,i have the most fun with FF3,and the fact that this game has an auto 2 player mode, where the SNES plays the role of your partner, even if i don't have a live 2nd player to play the game with, was a nice feature.

Final Fight Streetwise:
Gritty, edgy, and raunchy at times, this was a fun,and funny one,but the last few levels, with the mutant things made me say "When did Final Fight become Zombie Revenge?"...the unlockable 2 player arcade mode,in which you have the 3D graphics, and you can pick from Kyle,Cody,Guy and Haggar was an excellent bonus.I really liked who the final villian turned out to be,THAT was a shocker!!My fave line in this one was "I'm looking for a guy named 'the Stiff'."..and the girl's response to that line...lol..this game did have an odd sense of humor to it,and i liked it alot.

So,what did you think of the Final Fight series?

First off, let me say. This is a very good thread that you've started. And let me say why.

Yes he listed things, but he explained each thing and provided insight! My God. INSIGHT.

That's why this thread is quite groovy.

I love Final Fight. But I think Streets of Rage was better in some aspects, however, Final Fight had some much more memorable characters and stuff.

My favourite will always be the original. So yeah.

Also. WTF Strider?! MAN THAT GAME ROCKED BALLS. I'll be getting this game.

Haggar is too manly.

Bravery is better than a faint heart for a man seeking to put his nose out of doors. My fate and the number of my days has already been decided.

The first game and Mighty Final Fight are good. Any other games make me bored quickly and make me want to play Streets of Rage 2 or Dynasty Warriors or one of Capcom's licensed brawler titles (The Punisher mostly).

On the subject of Streets of Rage...
Streets of Rage is another good series.Part of why i liked SoR so much was that they reminded me alot of the fun and playing style of the Final Fight series.I've got all 3 of the Genesis games and SoR2 for Game Gear.

Another reason i liked those games was I thought Streets of Rage had memorable charaters too.Hell, what SoR fan could forget Blaze Feilding or Axel Stone?!?Mr.X was ruthless and crazed as the series villian. The hidden character Roo in...i think it was SoR2 or 3 was kinda funny.Skate had some good combos in SoR2 and 3.

The special attacks with the cop cars in SoR was slick as hell!I liked those alot. You see a cop car drive up and either use a gatling gun or a bazooka! That still makes me smile even today!

Oh,Will...if you like Strider,at the end of this year, there's Capcom Classics Collection 2 coming out for Xbox,360 and PS2.Confirmed titles include Strider (arcade version),Knights of the Round,Super Street Fighter 2 and yes,the original Street Fighter!(It's all over gamefaqs lately)

Mighty Final Fight:
It's been awhile since i played Mighty Final Fight,so this GBA collection i mentioned is on my list, big time.I remember playing MFF quite awhile back, and with the super deformed graphics,it reminded me of River City Ransom...lol...MFF was quite fun,but i wasn't too good at it,so i never was able to beat it.I still had fun playing it though, and i'm sure i'll have fun playing it again.

ADDED: Heck look at some of the import Sailor Moon games i own....Sailor Moon (SNES/Genesis) and Sailor Moon R (SNES) are beat 'em up games that use the Final Fight/Streets of Rage game engine. They even display enemy portraits by their life meters when you smack around the bad guys, just like Final Fight!

Spider-Man: Maximum Carnage and Separation Anxiety did that, too, and gave the enemies names. I pounded Joe, Luke, Max, and a million other random guys into the ground so many damn times.

Final Fight 3 was my favorite if only because of Lucia and her neat uppercut kick moves and shit.  Dean's supers were kinda cool too.

I was really surprised at FF3 because it added more new characters out of nowhere than old ones, and somehow, I actually liked both the new main characters.  Rarely do I meet new characters so far down the franchise that I actually like.  But two in one game?  Wow.

Of course Haggar is pretty cool.  But no one can deny the awesomeness of Guy.  I miss Maki =/

Yeah, those side scrolling beat-em-ups were fucking awesome.  SoR, those Spider Man games on the SNES.  All were classic.
And they just kept getting better.  Remember the last few Capcom and some other companies made before the beat 'em up genre died?  I think Battle Circuit was like the last one made.  BC and some of its peers were really advanced as far as beat em ups.  Pretty cool.  Could buy special moves and stuff.  Damn final boss was a pain in the ass though.

When I was a kid, I thought Maximum Carnage was THE COOLEST GAME EVER, but recently, after revisiting the title, I've found that it's complete crap.

Maximum Carnage was hard when I was a kid. I could never beat the last level.

I thought that the "Continue/Game Over" screens were pretty cool because they weren't just a simple countdown sequence but rather a literal death sentence for your characters. The only other games that I can recall where they did something like that were several of the other arcade beat-em-ups that Capcom made, as well as the arcade version of Ninja Gaiden.
