Sonic the Hedgehog
« on: August 09, 2006, 06:21:59 pm »
So lately I've been on this huge fucking Sonic kick. It's not even funny. Remember way back when I posted the crappy screenshot of the Sonic 3 Super Sonic glitch? Yeah, I've been on this hype since like 2 weeks prior to that. I perfected Sonic Riders (earned everything), beat Sonic Adventure 1 with Claver (new poster 'round here with irregular internet time), and am 4 Chao emblems from having all Emblems in Sonic Adventure 2 (and earning 3D Green Hill Zone). Once I move back to college Thursday, I'm gonna continue trying to beat Sonic Spinball and go about unlocking the hidden games. Been picking at Sonic Heroes a fair bit, too.

Sonic fucking rules. I prefer to stick with the Genesis games myself, as the Game Gear games aren't very good. Wait, that's a bit too generous. Suck is a much more accurate description. Although the first one for Master System is pretty good.

I recently replayed Sonic Adventure, making me realize why I love Sonic (the character and the game) so much. One of these days, when Sega gets their act together, they really ought to just make a Sonic game with just Sonic. Tails might be an exception. Just no more Knuckles or Shadow (Am I really the only person who hates these two? Metal Sonic was a good enough rival. He didn't need Douchebag the Made-up Animal or Angsty the Hedgehog to fill in that role), please.

Also, to any curious parties out there, there is no such thing as a good Sonic rom hack, barring one, and that's the Sonic 1 hack with a playable Knuckles with all of his abilities intact (even though I hate Knuckles, I will still say that this is a great hack).

A word to any wannabe hackers out there: Unless you are a friggin genius, DO NOT EDIT THE LEVELS. Fan-made levels suck 100% of the time, and only ruin any potential your hack may have had.

I hate Shadow to death. I'm alright with Knuckles (echidnas do exist, they're in Australia I believe), and I agree that Metal Sonic needs a serious comeback.  From what I've seen and heard so far, Sonic Wildfire on Wii should be Sonic-only.

1. From what i heard Sonic 1 on the Master System and Sonic 1 for Gamegear are the same game, actually.Just different systems.I liked some of the Game Gear games, but for the most part, the Genesis games were better.

2. Knuckles is okay by me.As far as Shadow,i really couldn't get into the later games like Adventure 1 and 2 or any of the others much,(those games just didn't interest me much)so since i have little experiance with Shadow, i can't really judge him.

3. I prefer not to play games hacks,i play the actual games themselves and i prefer to buy the actual games, that includes the import games i have.I'm not really into ROMs or hacks. To each their own.

I recently discovered Sonic CD.

Yes, Metal Sonic needs a serious comeback.

Yeah, you can play Master System games on a Game Gear, which would account for that one. Trying to imitate a game like Sonic on system not built for games that move that fast is a recipe for disaster.

However, if there's one thing we should all hate Sonic for, it's the influx of terrible mascot platformers that came after it. I'm talking Bubsy, Rocky Rodent, Awesome Possum, Punky Skunk, Mr. Nutz, Aero the Acro-Bat and Zero the Kamikaze Squirrel. If Sega weren't in the financial dog house, I think we'd be able to win a class-action suit for them being inadvertantly responsible for those atrocities.

Yeah, Sonic kicked off a ton of crap. There's been so many useless new characters since Adventure 1 it's retarded

I liked Sonic up until it went 3D. Adventure was horrible. Then you got all those new characters.

Sonic and Tails is the original duo, and Knuckles is probably my favorite of the series. Yeah, I'm okay with him, but he kinda added a bunch of stuff I didn't like. "Guardian of the island" or whatever (I don't follow the story). I was just used to picking those emeralds up for fun.

And I don't like "Dr Eggman". What ever happened to Dr Robotnik? That was a badass name.

i dunno...  i guess it was kind of a Princess Toadstool/Peach thing going on.  =/

man, i grew up on Sonic ever since my older cousin let me play his old Sega Genesis.  thus began my life as a gamer...

personally, i'm not exactly ticked off by the sudden large influx of new Sonic characters (i mean, the Mario series has a bunch of fairly new characters too), but more so by the tricky gameplay of the newer 3-D games.  it was HIGHLY annoying when you, for some unexplainable reason, couldn't hit that next enemy when you were doing a homing attack, or accidentally killed yourself when you tried to do a crucial light dash while holding the magnetic shield, and did a somersault off a cliff instead.  >_<;

oh, and as for my favorite Sonic game, so far it's Sonic CD.  i loved the bonus stages, the different time variations of the levels, and the killer soundtrack.  robotnik's boss fight music was wicked in that game!

i'm kinda bummed out that Sega didn't put Knuckles' Chaotix from the 32X system on any of their collection releases, as i kinda liked that game too, and i never managed to get all the "Chaos Rings" on it either.  makes me regret selling off my old game systems again...  =/

In Japan, his name was always Dr.Eggman.When Sonic 1 hit the USA,Sega of America changed his name to Dr. Ivo Robotnik.Lately they went back to using his japanese name.

Same as Princess Peach. In Japan, she's always been Princess Peach. In the USA for SMB1,they changed her to Princess Toadstool, but lately, they're using her japanese name.

My personal preferences are their american names, they made more sense, especially in Toadstool's case.

Yeah, but they introed Peach as Toadstool's first name. Before Mario 64 (or whenever they introduced "Peach" as her name) She was simply "Princess Toadstool". But now that she's Princess Peach Toadstool, she can still be Princess Toadstool if you want.

They introed Eggman as a derogatory nickname that Sonic gave Eggman in SA1. Since then, he's been using it himself. How does that make sense? He should still be calling himself Robotnik, even if all the animal characters call him Eggman.

3D went downhill with SA2, came back up a tiny bit with Heroes, then plunged into hell with Trash the Game (Shadow the Hedgehog).

(i mean, the Mario series has a bunch of fairly new characters too)
The difference is, most newly introduced characters in the Mario series show up in several games over the course of the series.  For example, Yoshi worked his way into several after SMW, and continues to appear often.  And we've seen alot of the fairly new additions of Professor E. Gadd, Baby Bowser and Toadsworth in recent games.

Sonic games seem to drop in new characters for a single game appearance, then we never see them again.

To me,he'll always be Dr.Robotnik.I could see his name being Eggman in Japan, his body is round like an egg,so that's probably where they got the name from originally, plus his battlestation was called Death Egg,so it's been established in Japan he has a thing about eggs. The name 'Robotnik' is also fitting,in that he turns all of Sonic's pals into robots and such.

As far as Mario games,i'd like to see Wart in a NEW Super Mario game, though that seems unlikely.I liked how in Super Mario Advance they gave him a voice! When you meet him he says "I'm the great Wart!Ha ha ha!".He also says "Ribbit!" when you give him a vegitable, and then when he 'dies',he yells "Ohhh!!"...lol

I'm with Roomate. I liked Robotnik's name as Robotnik and using "Eggman" as an insult.

I rather liked the idea of Knuckles as guardian of the floating island.  One man, tons of space, and he PROTECTS IT ALL.  It would thrill me for them to make a game starring only Knuckles where the whole deal was you got to defend the entire huge floating island.  In Sonic 3 and Knuckles, playing as Knuckles introduced you to several sections of the previous stages that you could never get to as Sonic (which I loved).  It'd be even more awesome to see that kind of stuff go on in a similar game.

As for Shadow the Hedgehog.  I think I can understand his despair or whatever over that Maria girl (SA2) and losing his identity (Heroes).  But it would be nice for them to show his calculating side.  Not just make him a whiner or whatever, but make him really cold and calculating.  Suspicious might also be a good trait to tack onto him to make him a "darker" character.

Shadow's real potential for becoming a good character lies in Chaos Control, I think.  I really wish that they had fleshed out that concept better in the Shadow the Hedgehog game. Rather than use guns and vehicles, make it so that Shadow earned more Chaos Emeralds, and as he gained more, his Chaos Control abilities grew.  Then maybe work with that as to his origins, Maria, and why he calls himself the Ultimate Life-form.  They could even use the game to flesh out the backstory on Gerald Robotnik.

I'd love a Sonic-only game.  I'd also like a Tails-only game where he could fly for as long as you dad-gum wanted to.  I hated that Tails was supposed to be able to fly like a helicopter for a long time, but you only got to do it for about 15 seconds.

E-102 Gamma was a favorite of mine.  Omega as well.  I liked that the robots Robotnik created had personality to them.  Plus, I've always been enamored by the E-series.

It was nice that in the Game Gear games, you play a 1 player game as Tails in some of them. The Game Gear games could have been better,i'd love to see what they would have been like if they had been made as Genesis games, with more possibilites for speed and control.

Knuckles Chaotix was great,i still know of places around my house that still sell 32X stuff, but the game itself it hard to get ahold of.If i see a Knuckles Chaotix,i'm picking it up plus a 32X,but if worse comes to worse,i can always find the game on Ebay, which will be no problem.

Even I, with my extreme anti-Shadow bias, would have bought and played this game.

i rented it for a few days...  i wasn't very impressed, although i thought the computer-based levels were pretty pimp.  the whole gun-wielding thing and having to loop through linear levels to complete goals really fucked up the flow of the previous 3-D sonic games.  that, and many of the repetitive voice-overs got REALLY annoying...  >_<;

Shadow the Hedgehog as it stand right now is Trash the Game. If the gameplay had focused on Chaos Control, like Claver mentioned, it would have rocked and I'd have played it.
