Some easy-to-get 2d shooters
« on: June 28, 2006, 01:40:06 pm »
As a fan of space shooters, I'd like to recommend this link:

http://shootthecore.moonpod.com/PClinks1.html

There are lots of free shooters to download here, though some are of questionable quality. My favorite of them is EndEffector; the gameplay is solid and it lets you save relpays.

Idinaloq is pretty good too, though some computers have a little trouble with the background polygons.

Enjoy.

Edit: most of the download links are to japanese sites, which can make getting the game more difficult. End Effector's download is right at the front and Id's site is in English so there shouldn't be too much trouble with those.

Edit MkII: Aditionally, some of the files require WinRAR to open.

So, no comments, eh? Maybe some screenshots will get your attention. Or maybe not, I don't know.

Edit: refined the code for those who don't like clicking on links.

If you decide to get End Effector, here's some info that might be helpful but isn't really explained.

Basic stuff:
The keys used are z,x,c and the arrow keys. The arrows move, obviously.

C pauses. In replay mode it slows the replay to half speed. When the game says "press start to skip" it means press c to speed things up.

X fires the normal weapons. There are no powerups in this game so what you see is what you get.

Z toggles the most interesting aspect of this game. It's a charged shot that originates where you are. It's stationary as long as you hold the button and moves towards and through your craft when you release the button. For example if you are to the left of the charged shot it moves to the left. It can easily move in any direction you need it to, but once released it travels in a straight path. Your movement is slowed while charging a shot; this is often helpful to get through dense clusters of shots.

The X and Z weapons have approximately the same damage per second if both are used perfectly, assuming the charged shot does not kill. Otherwise the charged shot can go through enemies for more total damage. They can both be used at the same time so there's no reason to let go of the x key.

Your hit box is tiny.

That's all I can think of at the moment. If you have any questions let me know.

I would like to second Reg's recommendation; End Effector is quite good.

It's only like 60MB or so, so you won't need much.

Civility is overrated, don't you think?
