Street Fighter Thread: Hyper Discussion
« on: September 11, 2006, 11:50:16 pm »
After considering 3rd Strike and reading that long ass Street Fighter story FAQ on Gamefaqs, it occurred to me that we may never see another Street Fighter game made.  Sure, we'll get more rereleases once Capcom stops making money from the recent PSP and PS2 Alpha games, but until 2D fighters ever get profitable again I don't think we'll ever see a new Street Fighter game.

And it's not as if Capcom could just make a 3D Street Fighter game in the current gen considering that there already have been a number of 3D games, most of which were passed over.

So if there's not going to get another Street Fighter game, 2D or otherwise, I think it'd be good to at least reflect on what's already happened within the Street Fighter games and universe.

Speaking of which, it's kind of difficult to imagine what a Street Fighter 4 would be like since there's not much you can do with any of the characters that hasn't been done already.

Chun Li got her revenge, Guile found his family, Q acted like a douche in a robot mask, Ryu wanderered around aimlessly searching for the fight until meeting Oro, Charlie died, etc.

You can't really dream up a story saying that zombie M. Bison's come back with a new Shadolaw, because while that might have worked in 1994, it's been so long between sequels that SF's fans have grown up enough to not take any shit like that.

Interesting thread. I played it back in the days of Street Fighter II (Street Fighter was more difficult) all the way to Alpha 3 and Third strike. So far, the Alpha games and Third Strike are so far my favorites.

I use alot of characters, but I like using Shin Bison on Analogy. FUN.

Edit: I played SF1 on the arcades and an emulator, and it is NOTHING compared to it's vast sequels. Maybe if they do a redux of Street Fighter 1 with the original as an unlockable, I'd be happy. Make it like Third Strike Style, selelct boss fighters too!

Interesting thread, why couldn't it have gone in the Street Fighter sticky?

I hate to sound like a xenophobe here, but now that the Street Fighter license is in Capcom USA's hands, it's for the best that there are no new Street Fighters. I mean, Christ, Final Fight: Streetwise. What the hell was that?

Maybe because Hyperguy wanted all Street Fighter things on here, and leave Third Strike on it's own thread. Either that, or it's our fault.

It's rhetorical question, dumbass.

Blah. Whatever.

Capcom's lazy as shit about making games these days. Sequels to their long running series are non-existant or slow in coming, while they spit out new series made of suck and fail.  I've been waiting on a Megaman 9 (don't even fucking try to pass off Megaman & Bass as Megaman 9), Megaman Legends 3, SF4, and a new Darkstalkers game, but it's not happening. They're lazy. They barely put any effort into the backgrounds and storylines of their new characters for SF3. It's retarded.

Not Final Fight, that's for sure.

I agree. Take a good look at Capcom Fighting Evolution, for example. They reused sprites from various fighters, and so far, only the backgrounds, music, and a character named Ingrid are the new things. Then there are the portraits of fighters.
Finally, there are endings that were sort of taken out of an Udon Comic book.

Yeah, Capcom is sort of losing it, so they might as well Analogies of their fighters to keep them from going completely bankrupt. Darkstalkers is a fine example, or Rival Schools. Heck, even Red Earth needs the Console treatment.

They've always been doing this shit, ever since the Naomi. Capcom being lazy is not anything new.

Yeah, but anytime people mention the lack of good Capcom sequels, their laziness is going to come up. That's the first and probably only reason they're not making good games anymore.

What I'd like to know is how money Guilty Gear's been making, considering it's nearly the only mainstream 2D fighter aside from KOF that's still being made.  If making 2D fighers is unprofitable why would SNK or Arc System Works continue to make them?

Not to mention, this is Capcom we're talking about here.  They're a household name as far as 2D fighters are concerned, so if they made an all new 2D fighting game with high res sprites and backgrounds I'm sure they'd still make money off of it.  Maybe not as much money as Resident Evil 4, but a profit nonetheless.

Getting back to Street Fighter I think a lot of the characters could have been developed a lot more.

Like for example, Sakura.  We never saw what happened to her after Alpha and it would have been interesting to see her in a game later in the SF timeline, like, dare I say it, SF3.  In hindsight, it's actually kinda odd that SF3 has Sean, Ken's student instead of Sakura.  I know they were pushing for all new characters but she did fit the role of novice shotokan fighter well.

Considering that, as far as I know, Alpha 3 was de-canonized, Sakura probably gave up after Ryu left her alone on that snowy mountaintop.
