Week in Gaming
« on: September 10, 2006, 08:18:37 pm »
Here's an idea I looted from the corpse of the late Famiconsumer. Rather than starting a thread on some game we're currently playing, we simply post the shit we're playing here, and all sorts of fun discussion can be facilitated.

CURRENTLY GOING THROUGH:

Yakuza- You can't really compare it to GTA or Shenmue. I'd say it's more in line with that sequel to River City Ransom, only a million times better. It's so much fun to slam a guy face first into a street light or dropkick a group of drunken businessmen and follow it up with a stomp to the face. BAKUYUUN ALERT: Although there are a lot of Asian chicks with huge hooters present, the main character looks an awful lot like WWE superstar Dave Batista. You have been warned.

Siren- So, I got back into Siren again. Even though I already have everything unlocked and know what's going to happen, it's still scary as fuck. Shame the sequel ain't coming over here.

Tekken 5- I've been playing this since I bought it a few months ago. Way, way better than the shitty DOA4.

Dead or Alive 4- It's fucking DOA. If you were expecting a renaissance of fighting games here, you're fucking stupid. All Tecmo did was change the announcer, change up Jann-Lee's movelist, add a retarded boss and make counters harder to do (for you. The computer is superhuman in its countering).

Big Brain Academy- Fuck this gay ass shit. Nintendo should seriously stop making games and just let SEGA use their properties, like with F-Zero GX.

Shinobi- More SEGA goodness here. Whiny nerds make this thing out to be harder than Battletoads, but that is because they are fucking gaming primordials who are easily impressed with Mode7 and Wiimotes. This is a man's game.

You forgot to mention the retarded boss in DOA4 is cheaper than all of SNKs bosses combined. What with her cinema-style grabs and throws and combos, and a move that can drain almost all your life instantly, add how hard it is to block her, and the fact she can teleport in the middle of your fucking moves, has insane defense. etc. etc.

Yeah. Fuck DOA4.

DOA has been a shitty fighting game since the first one in it's series. It's selling on tits, and tits alone.

Lately all I've been playing are party games on the Gamecube. Wario Ware, Mario Party 7, Mario Kart Double Dash, and sometimes on the side I'll play Samurai Champloo: Sidetracked on my PS2. Sidetracked is an amazing 3D beat-'em up. Wario Ware and Mario Party get stale kinda quick. You can only play these minigames for so long before you just burn out. Mario Kart was fun until I unlocked everything, and now it's getting boring again because nobody here can touch me in multiplayer.

I'm not too sure on Tekken being better than DOA4, despite having really good characters to use (Brian Fury and True Ogre are fun), but after I got better with the DOA4 storyline, all you gotta do is tone down the difficulty setting, and ram right into the boss before she does that teleport thing.

Believe me, I beaten the game with everyone available, now all I need to do is unlock Tengu. He better not be watered down, I love using him. He'll teach that Aqua-Kasumi who's the boss around here!

DOA still rocks, fags.

Anyways, I got a PS2 lately so I've been mostly playing Shinobi and Contra:SS. Those and an "indy" game called "Quantized Blaze." It's like Rez if it played like a 2D vertical shooter.

Let's see...

Warhammer 40k: Dark Crusade Demo- Well, the space commies finally get their debut, and it's about time. Was tired of playing as stuff that was blinded by various personality traits. Thankfully, the Kroot are also there to sanitze the area by eating the dead.

Killer7- If you have problems with the controls, your lack of skill is not my concern. I found neither the game nor story to be any great struggle to comprehend, despite reviews to the contrary. Dan Smith > Super Sentai, dramatic death speeches.

Wing Commander 1, 2, 3- Yeah, the originals of the series, before it decided to go off the deep end with Prophecy. This series is rather notable for (unlike the Star Wars games), keeping track of the evolutions of weapons and technology throughout the whole series: What might have been the most awesome ride in the first game is small potatoes in the second. Most folks don't end wars with the same weapons that they started with.

Freespace 2- Wing commander, perfected. The biggest draw for me would be the proper scaling of capital warships: No carriers that are only as big as a few fighters stacked together. Those things are big, and they don't make you forget it. If you've played wing commander, you know how it all works. It just works better here than anywhere else.

Initial D- Arcade stage rev.3- Probably the best arcade racing game I've played. The game doesn't dick around with Pole Position-era relics like other cars on the track. It's just you, your opponent, and if you lose? well, it's your own fault not that of some randomly-generated car that just "happened" to be in the right place to trip you up.

Metal Slug 2 and KOF 96 on my AES.

Koimomo on my laptop.

Might try to get that sound box in Curse of Darkness or try to finish Shadown the Hedgehog finally this week.  Depends on how long it takes me to get the remaining CGs for Koimomo.

recently beat Dirge of Cerberus.  i'll probably start working on the extra missions next time i have a chance to play.  other than that, i haven't really been playing that many games, mainly because i've been so busy with college and band lately.  i'll have to wait until more of my reserved games come in, which'll be a while.  which reminds me, i need to get a copy of Disgaea 2 sometime...

So far, the only Metal Slug game I haven't played is Metal Slug 6 and 3D. The music in both games are awesome.

Heh. All this talk about Tekken and DOA makes me glad I stuck to Virtua Fighter 4.

Virtua Fighter was good in the day, probably because it was the first 3D fighter ever. VF 2 was alright, because it was faster, and didn't get much into 3. 4 was slightly okay, but when I look back at those games.... They aren't even as good as they were back then!

Virtua Fighter is THE best 3D fighting game, period. The fighting engine is deeper and more balanced than any other to date. The problem? People don't want to learn it. It's not as flashy as DOA or Tekken. It takes considerably more thought and effort to be good at VF than it does to be good at DOA or Tekken.

Same here. I was always into 2-D fighting flair.

Edit: And why don't they make a Virtua Fighter 5 if it's going oh so well? For me, I think the series went downhill 3-up.

VF4: Evolution is the shit. I've always said Tekken and DOA are fighting for second place (although Tekken is miles ahead of DOA). I'm taking a break from it right now, but I'm pretty sure I'll be getting back into it hardcore.

WHY DON'T THEY MAKE A STREET FIGHTER II IF IT'S GOING OH SO WELL?

VF5 IS OUT ALREADY SMART GUY.

That's probably because I haven't seen any screenshots for VF5 yet!

AND, they already made a Street Fighter II. Heck, they made bunches of things for Street Fighter and it's many sequels, and it is still going strong since Analogy came out.

I P Freely indeed..... Hyperguy, can we ban these people who ram insults down our throats?  Of course, you don't have to..... Or make an announcement about that.
Some of our best people are leaving!

The North American market doesn't give a shit about Virtua Fighter, let alone Yu Suzuki for that matter. That's why you can get both Shenmue (1/2), a Dreamcast and VF4EVO for less than the price of a new game.

Sadly, they don't make Dreamcast games anymore. The most likely place to get them is EB Games and the like. Some Dreamcast games cost about a fortune nowadays!

No excuse. VF4 comes with a tutorial. The game wants you to be good at it.
