Installing Viper Lanjerie Series
« on: April 14, 2007, 05:22:00 am »
I have all 3 viper Lanjeries, but no matter what I do I keep getting an error half way through the installation say something like E:\user\movies\ And kanji past that.  I've tried putting the image on a disk, and I've tried everything I can think of.  Can anyone give me any ideas to how they installed this great game??

That would indicate one of three things:
1 - You are not running Windows in Japanese regional mode
2 - You do not have Unicode character support on your file system
3 - You have burned a bad image in which the file in that folder is not named in US_ASCII instead of Shift-JIS (it looks like ASCII jibberish instead of kana)

You don't have to install you know.  You can run the game directly from CD with the first option on the menu (its katakana for Game Play)  Does run slowly from CD though.

Unfortunatly I can't see the movies if I don't install it.  I looked in the file that it said it couldn't find, and found out that the user/movie file was blank.  don't know how to fix it, or if it can be fixed.

Yes the file is blank, but its intended as a placeholder for the setup to create the folder structure.  Some Windows "disk-cleaning" apps automatically delete empty folders, so without a 0 byte placeholder file, they get wiped and the program doesn't work.  One of the three things I listed is your problem, not the fact that this is an empty file.

If all you want to see is the movies, try this tool to convert them to AVI format.

Thank you for your help.  Yeah I still can't figure out how to install it (tried japanese non unicode standard for Windows Vista), but I was able to extract the movie files from the program.  Thank you for the help :).

Forgive me for bumping such an old thread, but I felt it was better to post a reply here than to make a new thread covering the same topic.
I've had this exact same problem with the Lanjerie series on three different computers over the course of 6 or so years. I recently failed to get the movies to play again and after some research this was the only link I saw that tries to cover my problem.

I can't get the game to install, but I can play the games flawlessly from the CD aside from the movie clips not appearing. I have my computer running japanese unicode, japanese regional mode and there's no ASII gibberish as all the names are in english. For example, the directory for the movies in question would look like Movies\01-GTB\MV-1.eav.
I've used mconv for all the Lanjerie titles before, but its just not the same without unlocking them and having them viewable in-game.  If anyone can help I'd definitely appreciate it!

I dont think there's any chance we see a Lanjerie game with playable movies.  It's probably coded for some old version of Media Player or some old Windows API stuff that no longer exists in modern versions.  Upgrading this stuff without original source code is a near impossibility.

Ah, well that's a shame. I was hoping it'd be an uncommon problem or something I was doing wrong on my end as it sounded like you were able to run them without a hitch. I was trying to install the wmtools codec in an attempt to see if that would do the trick, but Windows 7 didn't like that. Even my old computer with XP had the same problems. Its a bummer that there doesn't seem to be anything I can do, but thanks for the response.

Yeah it doesnt work in 64-bit versions of Windows.  You need to use a virtual machine to run it in 32-bit mode.  Or recompile it with a more modern C++ compiler that understands 64 bit architecture. (I need to do this anyway so its usable on the main site.)  The algorithm isn't difficult, so it could be recoded to use a more user-friendly interface, too.

This isn't something I wrote - I merely found it online 10, 11 years ago when the Lanjerie games were still new.

No, only selected scenes from games.  Plus a few new, unique scenes.

I don't ever do torrents!
And it seems that the link is offline.

Just a few weeks ago I had access to several older pc's with xp, that might have worked with the converter, but there are all gone now.

Ok, look, give me a day or two and I'll rewrite mvconv for modern PCs.

The algoithm is rediculously simple, I'm rather surprised no one's tackled it before: skip 12 bytes, subtract 1 from the byte value of all remaining bytes and output.  Sogna didn't exactly disguise it much.

Here ya go.

Convert EAV to AVI 6 KB (ADDED, 10/30/2014)
Converts EAV format movie files used by the Gokuraku VIPER Paradice series to standard AVI format.  Replaces the old mvconv program (that wasn't written by me), since it stopped working in Windows 7.  Note that you may have to run in Administrator mode if you want to convert the movie files installed to the default directory under C:\Program Files\Sogna.
