Title: Oh the *fun* life of a Grad Student
Post by: Doctor_Raven on August 23, 2006, 11:51:56 pm
Well Summer Courses are done... and looky look I still have to do Grad School =___=

The bad news:
I am .12 points away from reaching the B average needed to graduate from grad school, thus frustating me further and making my father angry because I'm not "working" harder to get it. Worse, the amount of red tape neccessary for me to expunge a previous grade is monumental task. Such that NO ONE has done it before. What's worse is that the idiot that is me (while naturally frustrated, annoyed and depressed over this situation) is more worried about the disspointment my parents are having with this turn of events. I also feel that I have begun to ruin my parent's life with my presence in the home.

The good news:
Looking at my grade situation, I only have to take one class and get an A- or better on it to finally graduate. I can also take in a course outside of SI since I have accquired the neccessary credits to pass, just not the grade average. This also means I can pay less for college because I'll be going part time, and with one course I can focus my study on it alone. I should also realize that the U of M is a DIFFICULT university and that my progress so far is damn good... but really I can't focus on that.

I really want to move in my life and grow up just a bit.

Dude, screw your dad. you didn't get .12 away from that average because you "didn't work hard enough". That's fucking bullshit. I know because I worked my ass off in Calc 2 and came within .6 of the C I needed to move up to Calc 2. It just rolls that way sometimes.

I know that and I should tell him that, but the thing is my dad is literally living in another world. The business world, him pressuring me this way is his method of making sure I succeed in life. Its not really helpful and besides I have been studying my ass off during summer courses, only problem is I narrowed my vision on Irish History. I did well with Political Science but the math parts of it killed me >:/

Hold on. Can someone explain something to me real quick? Grad school's college, right? And university's the highest school you can get in?

Quebec's hella way different, it goes:

Elementary Grades 1-6
High School [aka Secondary] Grades 7-11 [aka Seconday I-V]
College [aka CEGEP] 2, 3, 4 years
University, 3-8 years

Hey Doc, about your dad. If you really want to make your dad proud, go for it. Is he really bothering you? Do you really need to listen to him?
If you're moving out or something man, you don't have to take any kind of shit like that. do your best, get into what you want to, finish your studies. Get the hell outta there.

I've been having real shit with my family since I was 13 and I'm working on finding a way outta this place, but I have to wait another year or two until I finish my studies. I'm going in Circus Arts and that's all the way to the East, I'll have to move over there for school. I don't have to deal with my dad's bs from then on.

Yeah, I'm also in Graduate School so I feel some part of your pain.  Currently I'm working on my Preliminary Oral Exam after which I can find out whether or not I can continue on to work on my Ph.D.

Here is the Grade Break Down as I understand it:

Elementary: K-8
High School: 9-12 (18 yrs old by the time you graduate)
Bachelors: 4-5 years
Masters: 2-3 years
Ph.D.: 3-8 years

Hey Doctor Raven what degree are you working on?

i'm a junior in college now, and i still haven't declared a major yet...  i'm planning on going into graphic design, though.  i'll finally be able to start learning Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop soon...  as well as how to use a Mac, lol, seeing how the computers in my class only use that operating system.
