Seriously...

There's six people on, but no one's saying a single thing...

I'm getting my logo details hammered out with this graphic artist I'm working with, I just now got on the forums to see if there were any posts I missed, and umm I'm gonna go play Legend of Zelda : A Link to the Past in a few.

Hmmm say something huh?

SOMETHING

Link to the Past.  I loved that game.  I remember it got the number 2 spot in EGM's 100 best video games of all time.

Well you create a person who will go through a system or program you are modifying/designing. They usually have goals to accomplish, hindrances and experience(but no big ass sword or magic), and follow certain tasks.

FFVII was good in my opinion, but it was NO Number 1 game. By any means.

If you're going to make a Final Fantasy Number One, it should be Final Fantasy VI. To put VII above VI is blasphemy.

The best thing about FF7 was Materia. Glorious, comboable, abusable Materia. I had it set up so all I had to do to win was stand there and heal every so often; my characters would counter attack for ten times the damage I took.
Title: Re: Say Something
Post by: Echelon on December 09, 2005, 09:14:59 pm
Espers got a little abusable too though, I'd say.

I mean, 4 characters being able to cast Life 3, Cure 3, Haste 2, Flare, X-Zone, Ultima, etc? :P

Mediocrity: Hey, IV was good.  =D
Too underated.
Title: Re: Say Something
Post by: Ellendesu on December 09, 2005, 11:14:29 pm
Final Fantasy IV was frickin great.

I mean c'mon, that game had GREAT characters, I mean let's review.

Cecil: You start. the game. as a DARK KNIGHT how cool is that? And even when he becomes a Paladin he still is major badass, the man had a personality, emotions, things that quite frankly wern't around in video games at the time as much as they should be.

Kain: Nuff said.

Theres more, but seriously, even with the shoddy American translation the story was GREAT. Same with VI, VII was good, but it just seems like it was made to be a test of what Square could do with the new hardware...I hate to say this and I will probably lose respect for this, but I liked VIII more than VII, mostly because VIII felt more complete than VII.

Eh, whatever.

Well, it's just that my favorite FF is basically fifteen years old, and with how good the other FF games are, I don't know...the game itself seems timeless. And I have all these memories of playing it while I was younger. I mean, it was basically the first story-heavy RPG I ever played. The characters evolved, some died, and Cecil underwent a class change. When you're, y'know, twelve years old, that shit is the bee's knees.

I also loved FF9. I think that 7 is a better game, but I don't like it as much as I like 9.

My grandma, God rest her soul, bought me my first Final Fantasy... (no II or IV in Japan).  My most fond memory is not power levelling and getting crushed by the dolls in the dwarf castle before Golbez ( ~1600 HP :( )... and fighting those collapsing doors that always took out one of your party members... ("Stop targetting Cecil!")

Now look at what a marvelous person I've bec... hmmm...

9 WAS good, because it was essentially the last "traditional" Final Fantasy.

When I was younger I got stuck on those stupid Calcobrena too man, but let me tell you, Ashura in the land of summoned monsters was the worst, I had a rougher time with her at first than I did Zeromus :P

I put seven at the bottom of the pile with one. Eight and two are better, and in turn six better than them. But four is far and away the best.

Squall still irritates me to this day.  Why make your main character an unlikable, slient, brooding pain in the ass?  Jesus!  I found it easier to relate to Tidus, ferchrissakes, and I would have hated that guy in real life.

I put seven at the bottom of the pile with one. Eight and two are better, and in turn six better than them. But four is far and away the best.

WORDS

Final Fantasy 1 was terrible lol. But hey, it spawned the rest of the games.

I just liked the Super NES Final Fantasys the best. Damnit.

Oh, and VIII...Squall was the way he was because he was supposed to be the ideal soldier, think about it, he follows orders, and doesn't really care what he himself thinks until he meets up with certain people that change him...he has no desire in his life for the things that essentially make people human...Rinoa changes all of that of course.

A lot of people hate VIII because of the junction system and because of the characters, but you know, let's look at this way, VIII had characters with a lot of unique personality traits that made them stand out and bring the best or worst out of eachother, you had human characters with human problems and human emotions, VII's characters tended to have the personality of a wet brick.

Hell, I give VI the most kudos because quite frankly, to have that many characters and actually take the time to put in storylines and important little side quests for each one? That's frickin' awesome, they really let you know your characters.

IV dealt with a lot of adult issues for an SNES game, and I dig that, I played through the game later in life and wondered "Wow, I was into this stuff when I was a kid? Was it just because Fire 3 looked so fuckin' cool?", it was a very good game, like JG said it wasn't the best, but I give it mad props for being what it is.

Also, we've forgotten about V, which took the most excellent Job system Final Fantasy 3 introduced on the Famicom and dealt it a wicked upgrade. I mean the story was pretty lame and all, but it was full of cool features and some nifty characters. (When a main character dies it should frickin' matter people. Gawd)

X? I liked X, I liked the Sphere Grid leveling system, I got into the characters and thier stories, and the plot was pretty well done. X-2 was pretty much fanservice and blah. But I still liked it and enjoyed it.

I try playing through Final Fantasy VII now and I can't do it, it just sits on my shelf next to things like Vandal Hearts and my dad's copy of Saltwater Sport Fishing as one of those games I will probably never play again. And that's a sad thing. I can go back and play games like Final Fantasy NOT VII, and enjoy them greatly, finding out something new eachtime, but VII was just so fucking cut and dry.

Also on a note, do you know why Kefka from FFVI is the best FF Villian? And why I dig that game so much and probably the same as JG and some other people? Simple. KEFKA MET HIS GOAL AND CONQUERED IT. He didn't waste time and try to beat around the bush, he's like "FUCK YOU ASSHOLES HURR HURR" and he destroys the world. period. even after you defeat him the world is still ruined...and his legacy will live on. THATS A villian, no remorse, no emotional baggage, just a kill-crazed psychopath. (Also see the Joker in Persona 2 for villians that I think kick ass hard)

Anywho, I'm out, done with post.

Title: Re: Say Something
Post by: daitanuki on December 10, 2005, 11:57:46 am
I just had no desire to play a character with no desire for anything human.  I couldn't manage to sit through it until he became supposedly mildly likeable.  I never saw any of the VIII characters as any more fleshed out than VII, just designed differently.  I've personally never found anything all that great about FF.

Now, give me a good Suikoden game anyday.  I did say good Suikoden game; IV was the FFVIII of Suikoden.
Title: Re: Say Something

Ironically enough I don't care for Suikoden. lol

However, what's your opinion on the Star Ocean series? I thought that was very very good.

Title: Re: Say Something
Post by: JG on December 11, 2005, 08:58:15 pm
Better read my post again Bill. I stated 4 > 6, not the other way around. I'll give 6 the better story, but 4 had better characters, better balance, and a much badder, tougher villian.  Kefka's a maniac that is way too easy to beat (not to mention that no one can tolerate his laugh in SPC700 PCM)  Zeromus can flatten your ass over and over with Black Hole.

By the way, 5 was ok, but it takes way too long to get your characters the 4X skill. 4 & 6 are still both better.

Unfortunately, I've never played Star Ocean.  With such limited time to play games, I tend to play with my wife, and she prefers games with prominent female characters (preferably playable).  How does Star Ocean measure up in that respect?
Title: Re: Say Something
Post by: Mediocrity on December 12, 2005, 07:32:29 pm
There's no multiplayer, but you can control any character in your party. Tales of Symphonia (for the Gamecube) has multiplayer and an equal amount of male and female characters.
Title: Re: Say Something
Post by: JG on December 12, 2005, 09:30:43 pm
ToS aint bad either.  Too many religious overtones and a weak ending though.  But if she likes, you can use a party of nothing but female characters (all four) starting around mid-way through the game (about 30 hours into it, as its about 75-80 in length), plus its multiplayer (two players can control one character each, and AI controls the other two characters [the battles are realtime]).

Or if she likes single player, turn-based RPGs, go for Skies of Arcadia Legends.  Of the three major characters, two are female.  Plus its the finest RPG ever made, but not for that reason.

Both are only $20 now, too. Can't go wrong with those in the Christmas booty.

Wow... it really does my heart good to see someone else say that. That was the first game that ever had any real emotional impact on me storywise. Truely epic, particularly if you were one of the people playing it when it first came out. I was about 17-18 when it came out, and I had starwars on the back of my mind, cuz it made me feel like those movies did way back when i was only 5. Kefka was great, he wasn't some whiny ass villan that was just pissed off at the world, he aimed right for the top... become god. And he did. Ok, he was kinda whiny, but he was a nutter, so you gotta leave room for that.

I also gotta give props to the first and original. When it first came out there was nothing else like it, and i have some fond memories playing it endlessly, pulling all nighters with buddies, and always fearing that evil swamp cave. Fucks sake, did i ever hate that dungeon...

I loved all the FF games. Guess you could say I'm a fanboy, pure and simple... but playing through FF-X, I couldn't help but feel that something was missing. I thought it was a great game, just something didn't sit right with me, and I've never put my finger on it. The world deffently felt smaller though, I can say that much.

There's easily better RPG's out there other than the FF games, but yeah, again FFVI is by far my favorite also. It's the only FF I've gone back to, and completely beaten 3 times by now.

Other RPG's I'd say I like more than the FF's, would be:
Secret of Mana, Seiken Densetsu 3, Chrono Trigger / Cross, Breath of Fire IV, Suikoden II, and maybe Star Ocean II. I've just kind of started playing that one, but haven't gotten too far yet, the battle system is amazing though.

Chrono Trigger was a great game. Mad props to my boy Magus.

Star Ocean II is really good, it'll take you forever to get everything, and there's all sorts of interesting things in that game to find, if you enjoy it I HIGHLY recommend Star Ocean :Until the End of Time, it totally pwns all of the recent Final Fantasy efforts by a landslide.

Bluelyth rocks, post more.

Well.... the Japanese version of ToS is PS2.  Nintendo helped pay for the internationalization and got exclusive NA/Europe rights for it.  The psuedo-sequel Tales of Legendia is way behind schedule as I understand it.

If you have a Dreamcast, you can pay out the nose for an old copy of SoA.  But it doesn't have as many sidequests as SoA:L, and it'll cost you a good deal more due to rarity.

Anything in the top 20 has to have some staying power.  It can't be on shelves for a few months then be impossible to find a few years later like FFT.  Sorry but I couldn't imagine either FFT or FF9 anywhere in the top 50 just for that reason alone.

And how many times must it be said?  FF4 > FF6.

Knowing EGM, I'd guess something totally off the wall (like Jet Force Gemini), something that just as many people hate as love (like Tomb Raider), something too modern (like God of War), or too uninventive (anything starring Crash Bandicoot)  They've probably thought of something all of the above.

I'd still cast a vote for SMB3. That would have been early in EGM's life, but still within range.

You can put your pants back on, ladies, Street Fighter II > Halo

the list (http://boards.1up.com/zd/board/message?board.id=egm_disc&message.id=612074)
20. virtua fighter arcade
19. super mario kart snes
18. pitfall
17. halo
16. golden eye 007
15. donkey kong arcade
14. SMB3
13. adventure
12. MGS PS1
11.metroid
10. pong
09. GTAIII
08. LOZ: Orcarina of time
07. space invaders
06. Super mario 64
05.legend of zelda
04. tetris
03. SFII
02. Pac man
01. SUPER MARIO BROS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seems about as sane as these things come.
Title: Re: Say Something
Post by: JG on January 21, 2006, 10:14:26 pm
I guess that must be a list comparing games in respect of how much they owned everythign else when they first came out, not with each other (becuase obviously SMB3 > SM64 > SMB1)

I guess I can live with that list though.  Don't know what GoldenEye is doing anywhere near the top 20 though (not all that innovative or overwhelming popular at the time)  I'd also have to knock GTA3 down below SMB3 and DK but I'll give it due rights to remain in the top 20 form everything I've heard about it.

And I thought their list was only going to include games made since EGM's inception. I don't think they were around yet to witness half of those. (By my reckoning, 1, 2, 4 [original pc, not the gb version], 5, 7, 10, 11, 13, 15, and 18 all were pre-EGM.)
Title: Re: Say Something
Post by: JG on January 21, 2006, 10:34:01 pm
Just checked the full list of 200 and like we all thought, they put FF7 above any other FFs, and above any other RPGs other than a pair of Phantasy Stars (and not even the best ones) They should have stuck with a top 20 and not made fools out of themselves by dropping the ball like that. The more I look at this list the more is pisses me off.

Skies of Arcadia, Sonic Adventure 1, Mario Kart Double Dash, Mega Man and/or Mega Man II, and the Madden series (I think 95 was the first, and therefore, groundbreaking title) are surprisingly absent. Each definately top 50 material for anyone (or any magazine) who would know what they were talking about. I see other games way too far down the list for where they should be, too: Mortal Kombat 2 and Pole Position jump out.  And original Sonic 1 all the way down at 56!? Blasphemy!! It was clearly THE game of the year when it first came out!  Every little boy and many a girl wanted a genesis for that game alone.

So, uh, anyone play Final Fantasy 7?  That motorcycle scene was tight!

So was that scene when all of the weapons leave the crater, and you get to see Tifa's juggs flop around for a good 4 seconds before she falls down.  That was probably the best moment of the game for me.

I mean, even if you took out the fact that they were on an airship and being hit by shockwaves, it was only a matter of time before she capsized from all of that extra weight.

Too bad you have to labor through the whole game just to get to that point. They should have had her flop around 5 minutes into the game, not five minutes from the end.  Or better yet, follow the rules of fan service and repeat it every so often to keep things interesting (because the plot sure as hell isn't.)
