Title: The Dark Knight
Post by: ROMate on July 19, 2008, 11:07:36 am
Spoiler tags will be used by anyone posting about  plot points and sensitive information like
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
or else there will be reckoning. However, not-so-sensitive stuff like how Heath Ledger was a Joker on par with Jack Nicholson, or how Michael Caine's Alfred is still your favorite character/cast choice in these movies, is just fine without spoiler tags.

I saw this Thursday at midnight, and even though I'm STILL cranky and haven't caught up on my sleep, I'm glad I went and saw it. it blows Batman Begins away (though Begins is still a great superhero movie in it's own right) and it should make the guys who're doing the Marvel movies sweat a little. Still, having said that, I do have some thoughts:

Movie was LONG. Movie was l-o-n-g LONG. Did it feel drawn-out? No, but

I believe that this was THE Batman movie.

I don't do Spoilers.

Bale was in top form, as usual, the man cannot botch a role.

I do not care for the replacement Rachel Dawes, Katie Holmes was not only a better actress, but more attractive to look at. Christ, what an ugly broad. If Nolan wants Batman to be believable, I guess hes made his point by casting one of the most plain looking female leads EVER.

I approve wholeheartedly of Ledger as the Joker, honestly, its too bad the man is gone. Because lets face it, this was his DEFINING ROLE. I have never seen a better Joker portrayal, I love Nicholson's Joker, but this blew it away, no shit. I'm not giving into the hype, because as an actor, I do NOT care for Ledger. But this role was just...wow. He blew my mind. Amazing.

Eckhart as Harvey Dent, he played the role well, I felt it went smoothly.

It was long, but it did NOT feel like that it, not to me at least. This is the ADD generation, where most people are too busy worrying about getting home and sleeping or playing a video game to want to sit and watch an excellent film. Suck me, it was fucking awesome. It wasn't too long, it was filled with content. You want a movie that was too long? Lets talk Lord of the Rings, movies about walking. Awesome. But that's for another thread.

Nolan DID sign a 3 movie deal, so I can't wait to see what he does with Batman next. I give it a 10/10

Not really on topic but speaking to the long part.  This is why I'm a fan of bringing back an intermission (especially for epic films like LotR).  Give people a chance to stretch and take a break.

Sadly I'm a loser and have not seen the Dark Knight yet but I fully intend to rectify that sometime this week.

I wouldn't have seen it at midnight if I hadn't been invited by my best friend. You're only a loser if you fail to see it before it leaves theaters.

I remember looking down at my watch partway through the movie, thinking that so much had happened we must have been getting near the end.  The movie was not yet halfway over.  What an incredible feeling that was.

The only Dark Knight I like is the Black Knight from Fire Emblem.

Don't forget Cecil from Final Fantasy IV.

(I'm sure BatMan could beat him in a fight though.)

(We probably shouldn't start the Batman versus ??? stuff, as we all know that Batman would win anyways.)

Only if we get the Batman fanatics that assume:

1) Batman has foreknowledge of his enemy's identity
2) Batman has at least 24 hours to create a plan
3) Batman is able to create a gadget to specifically exploit the opponent's weakness.

In most situations, none of these things are true. They may become true after an initial encounter, or after days of Batman fighting to a loss or a draw. Against certain opponents, these things cannot ever be true; people claiming Batman could defeat some of the more powerful characters in fiction,  are banking on some kind of cosmic asspull plot device that will fulfill one or more of the 3 things listed above. Bats is a hardass, a survivor, and a winner, but he doesn't auto-win any given battle.[/Use Your Common Sense Rant]

He also has a campy 1960s TV show and a number of bad movies (Batman & Robin, anyone?) behind him that he'll never be able to live down.  Holy Haunted History, BatMan!

"Fuck me." "Will do!"

Just thought I would illustrate Hippie Ogre operating humongous destructo-mecha versus Batman.

XD I actually laughed out loud at that. Good work.

Also, a point to JG for recalling some of Batman's more unflattering moments.

True that.  Still you have to admit several superheroes have a similar track record in the business of motion pictures.

When one argues that batman would win in a given fight, it's usually not based on logic, but on awesomeness factor.  When you believe that Batman is as awesome as heroes get... no one can beat batman, because you know he's more awesome.

Batman is hella awesome, but it still doesn't make him default-win anything. Hell, even in his own line of shows/comics/movies, he rarely, if ever, wins as hardcore as his fans want him to, and never does he win automatically.

True that.  But then again if there wasn't the struggle it wouldn't be that interesting to watch.

On the plus side I did see the Dark Knight and I can firmly say that Christian Bale is by far my favorite live-action Batman (not that Batman Begins didn't sell me on the idea).  Still I enjoy the animated series just a sliver more.  Nonetheless Heath Ledger's preformance as the Joker is outstanding and I will agree with Atrican that Maggie Gyllenhaal is just not that atractive (still that could be the point).

I'm getting curious as to what classic villians will appear in the third movie.  I'm guessing that Catwoman may appear and possibly the Riddler.

This is one of my favorite comic movies but I don't think marvel should sweat with DC's movie marks. All they got going for them is Bat Man and Superman so far.

Ledger makes a good Joker but only when it comes to Jokers planing and sadistic sides. No one is crazier than Nicholson. If I had to choose to be killed by Nicholson's Joker or Ledger's Joker, I'd choose Ledger because he would either kill me or have someone else do it. Nicholson's Joker would make me live a degrading month because he'll attack the deodorant, soap, and mouth care factories then poison the water supply with hallucinogenics and make me kill my sister because I thought she was the Easter bunny and she wanted to eat my brains (I can't make this stuff up). Then sprinkle money over my city to make me vote for him for mayor.

I also believe George Clooney had the potential to be the best Bruce Wayne. I blame directors and writers.

You do make an interesting point.  Let's say the both Ledger and Nicholson do excellent jobs with the role but play it differently.

As for DC movies it would be nice to see them do more with some of their other characters.  The best thing they had going for a while was JLU (which was awesome).
