Title: Viper Island Games
Post by: Trapani21 on March 20, 2008, 10:24:50 am
Anyone know how to run the Viper Island games properly? I get a message about Projector Skeleton Macomedia, Inc. not running properly. I searched elsewhere for an answer but came up empty. Thoughts?

I think you have to install shockwave flash player in order to get them to work.

Vols 1 and 2 don't work in XP.  I don't know why they don't.  The later ones do, perhaps becuase they use a different loader.
Play them on an older system... or download Macromedia MX and google for the decoder to decode protected .dxr files back into regular Director .dir files.

I've downloaded Flashplayer before, but it doesn't seem to work on my system. Thanks for the suggestions though. I'll test them out.

Would an emulator like PC98 work?

A PC98 emulator runs PC98 roms, so it wouldn't work.

Well, ROMs isn't technically the right word here.  The data files are read-write, and mimic floppy disks and hard drives (PC98 is, for the most part, IBM-compatible hardware.)  The right term would be disk image.

And if you had a PC98 hard drive disk image (.hdi) with Windows 3.11 or Win95 on it, then yeah, I guess you could get Island 1 & 2 to work on it.  Never tried it myself though.  If someone can find me an .hdi file with a pre-2000 version of Windows on it, I'll give it a shot.

I had it working fine about three months back, but now 1 & 2 just don't seem to work anymore.

Did they come from the Viper Games Collection torrent, or do you have the actual disks?

My original CDs have the same problem.  So its not caused by making/burning disc images.

Don't feel bad. After two years of study, I still can't read Japanese.

Ugh.  Radicals are a terrible way to search for kanji.  I greatly prefer the De Roo method.  Unfortunately there's not a good web-based method for this, so I did what any real programmer would do in this case: make my own.

You guys can try it (http://www.notequalsoft.com/productivity/ime/ime.html), but it'll only work with IE so far.  Safari and Mozilla have a ways to go in supporting external XML resource files and I haven't figured out a workaround yet.  And you'll have to give it a few seconds to load.  It's got to pull down and parse a 5+ MB xml file to your browser containing all the kanji search data (compressed it comes in around only 200kB so don't freak out)
