Which one is your favorite.
Mine whould probably be 94. I dunno why but i seem to play that one when i play a kof game.
-
Dunno. I didn't like KoF 99 too much though I enjoyed playing as SNK characters in Capcom vs. SNK.
Last I checked there was also some PS2 KoF game bundle that was released-basically two KoF games on one disc. Has anyone played it, and more importantly, is it worth the cash?
-
I have capcom vs snk 2 millionaire fight on my dc. Quite a good game, nice selection of characters.
-
Going by the amount of hours I put into it when I was playing a KOF game, I'd day KOF 02.
Best of the Orochi and NEST sagas going at it.
There were actually 4 KOF games released in 2 double packs for the PS2.
KOF 00-01
KOF 02-03
I got KOF 02-03, but haven't really sat down with it yet. I heard it's an improvement over KOF 00-01 though.
What little I played of KOF 00-01, it didn't seem that bad; considering that I was using the PS2 controller.
-
let's see... hmm... my fave KoF must be '96. (actually that was the very 1st KoF game i've played), and my least fave is KoF 2001 (hate the art works and they made Kyo and Iori weak.)

The closest I ever came to playing an SNK fighter was when Hyperguy went to the bathroom and left Capcom vs SNK on, so I tried to do Terry Bogard's Buster Wolf to see what the big deal was.
-
Of all of the SNK characters, I have to say that I enjoy playing as Terry Bogard the most. Maybe it's because he's the good guy, ultra powerful, and cool looking, but besides all those I just can't get enough how charming his broken English is. "Hay, cam ohn, cam ohn!" and "Are YOU okay?! BustA Woolf!" are my favorites.
Speaking of which, anyone know what's the story behind orochi blood? Last I heard orochi was supposed to be some eight headed serpent monster from Japanese mythology, though I'm not clear on how it relates to KoF. I know there's an orochi version Iori and Shermie.
-
Orochi is the eight headed snake dragon. It's the evil creature from the Shinto story of Susanou, the water god, and Amaterasu, the sun goddess. In one part of the story, Susanou saves the last remaining daughter of a family from being sacrificed to the world destroying orochi who has eaten the other seven daughters in each of the seven previous years. Ont he day the orochi is to return, Susanou turns the girl into a comb to hide her, then he and the parents make eight cups of Sake, which each of the heads of the orochi drink, so that all are drunk. Susanou then slays the beast and cuts off its tail, which Amaterasu crafts into Japan's most legendary sword, the Sword of Billowing Clouds (think Excaliber, Claymore, etc.)
Apparently, the evil doers in KOF want to revive the orochi to once again wreck havoc on the world. Can't help ya with the blood part though.
-
Can't help ya with the blood part though.
I can handle that one, though there's others that know it far better than I.
In KOF, the Orochi blood is carried by a select couple of people, two of which are Iori and Leona.
In Iori's case, his decendants and the decendents of Kyo fought together to banish Orochi, who was sealed by Chizuru's decendents. Some time after that, both Iori and Kyo's clans became bitter enemies. One thing lead to another and Iori's clan made a blood pact with the Orochi (Thus, this is why Iori's flames are purple.).
In Leona's case, her father was one of the decendants of the Orochi clan. He didn't want his daughter to be part of the whole cirlce of Orochi thing and because of this, he was killed by the KOF 96 boss, who also awoke the Orochi blood in Leona at that time, which lead Leona to kill her entire family.
Both Iori and Leona went berserk in KOF 97 due to the Orochi blood in them becoming active due to Orochi's immenent return.
Other characters that have been identified to possess Orochi blood include:
Mature
Vice
Goenitz
Yashiro
Shermie
Chris (Whose also the vessel for Orochi when he was reborn at the end of KOF 97.)
Yamazaki
Rugal siphoned some of the blood after having his eye taken by Goenitz, but apparently humans can't handle the Orochi blood unless they are part of the bloodline.
There's some speculation that the end boss from KOF 03 as well as the group of people that appear in the ending are also part of the Orochi clan.
There's probably a faq out there that could explain things better than me.

Just to note, the KOF story guide by K. Lantis at GameFAQs.com should only be read with caution. While it contains plenty of proven canon facts, he attempts to fill in the blanks by making stuff up, which ultimately serves to confuse things further. Speaking of fighting game plot guides though, Tiamat's Street Fighter plot guide is very reliable and only based on proven canon (heck, apparently the writers for Udon's Street Fighter comic book have used this). Saiki's Darkstalker and Samurai Shodown story FAQs are awesome too and use the same format. I believe Lantis said he'd work on a new KOF guide in a similar fashion, but I don't think anything ever came of that.

i guess the Orochi Saga is the best saga so far in the KoF series... got a question... does anybody knows any english site that has news or updates on KoF XI???

Is it me, or is Kyo looking less and less like Kyo every year?
-
maybe its because he's getting old (like terry and ryo)???
-
It's just you.
Also, those are from the King of Fighters anime thing Production I.G. is working on, so no word if that'll actually show up in a game.
-
eh?! so there will be a KoF anime????? if so, do you have any info on this????
-
Here's all we have right now. (http://neogeofreak.sbpnet.jp/news/0508/06/index.html) No word on what format it is or anything.

The only KOF game I've ever really had the chance to play is '99. I had a lot of fun with it but I've heard that '98 is probably the best. I'll take your word for it that '02 is really good; I sort of lost track of the series after '00.
The main problem I have is that the KOF series isn't very popular where I live. The computer doesn't really measure up to a competant human player for many reasons, the most important of which being that I don't find it to be nearly as much fun. I mean, who cares if I learn a 50% no-DM combo with Kyo-2 if no one plays the game? Also, the computer can trick you into thinking that certain strategies are viable against other people when they're actually not and vice-versa. This isn't really a problem with the game itself, though.
I guess I should read up on the changes in the KOF fighting system and characters over the last few years. Some of the transitions from one year to another have been pretty drastic; I guess I shouldn't be surprised if by now they're using a completely different game engine.

They need to stop making KoF games goddamnit. Ever since SNK died, it's just been downhill. '99 was the last, great KoF. *bemoans the death of innocence*

I actually enjoyed KOF 2001-2002. Both are worthy KOFs IMO.
KOF 2003's a different story though...
-
I like KOF:MI, though the graphics are a bit dated, even for when the game was new.
I'm looking forward to MI2.

The enemy AI in Street Fighter Alpha 1 and 2's Dramatic Battle Mode is insane...that's a tough AI.Some of the KOF AI is hard for me,sometimes it's not...i guess i have days where i'm good and days that i'm bad.
I like the KOF series and it's characters, and i don't tend to worry if a series is popular or not, pretty much i look at a game individually...if i have fun playing it,i tend to keep it,no matter what the poularity of the game/series is.For me the fun factor is important.Though i can agree,if the AI is too easy for someone, they might not have fun with a game with weak or easy AI.
I will agree something about KOF 2003 did seem different overall.I can't quite put my finger on it,but something about it didn't 'feel' the same.I think the KOF's i enjoyed most were the games covering the Nests Saga (KOF Evolution for DC,and KOF 2000/2001 for PS2).

Hmm. Maybe I should clarify. I know that the AI of SNK games can be very difficult. I just find that playing against other people is much more fun. I guess I'm kind of competitive that way, but there's also room for jokes and such. For example, for a while my brother liked to play KOF '99. In a Ryo (him) vs. Athena (me) match, I activated a Crystal Bit DM and he activated a Haou shoukoken SDM. The Haou shoukoken hit a crystal bit and vanished, not affecting the bit at all.
We were both laughing so hard we had to pause after seeing that. This was shortly after we had stopped watching Dragon Ball Z so the parallel seemed too close to let go. "I put everything I had into that Haou shoukoken, but it had no effect at all!" he said in an overly dramatic manner. We took turns describing the fireball hitting with a massive explosion but leaving Athena untouched, and so on. That was probably the most memorable match of KOF'99 I played.
So, fighting games can be fun on their own. But they're better when played with other people, in my opinion.

Oh,i see...lol...i don't do much VS mode stuff, because when i did that in the arcades, alot of gamers(but admittedly not all of them)..turn it into "I'm better than you and i'll kick your ass."...and when you do beat them, they get mad and say crud like "I'm gonna whip your (Bleeping) ass next round!"...and they get all bent out of shape over a game.
Some of my friends are like that, but not as bad as people i played against randomly in the arcades. So,i usually don't do much VS mode stuff...i've found over the years that i'm alot more of a co-op mulitplayer person.

'03 and '98 is where it's at. I haven't played XI yest as it isn't in my area but I plan to soon. My tem for '03 is K'(Leader), Terry, and Kyo. I occasionally use Shingo as my leader cause his LDM is destructive.
-

Damn straight. Can't agree on '03 but you've got me on '98. Dream match never ends, baby.
-
After an extensive search I couldn't find a copy of '98 for the PSX. It exists, but it's old and no one is selling it, as far as I can tell. I probably could find a MAME copy somewhere but I can't play these games on the keyboard. Also, 2 player mode would be near impossible. So that's very annoying.
On the plus side, I've found a 2000/2001 disc for sale. Anyone have comments on whether that's worth getting?

re: '98
That's what winkawaks/mame + a gamepad is for >_>
<_<

Same here.... KOF94 is the classic and the best one.
I was playing it every day in the Arcade when I was young. :)
