Title: Quandry over my laptop
Post by: Doctor_Raven on September 06, 2007, 12:23:45 am
Well guys if anyone has been wondering where I have been in time and space recently (I know someone out there might have worried :bigtran) My laptop has had an oopsy. It's now missing its config\system branch (or itsw corrupted). This has forced me to go onto my folk's PC now to get proper net access.  Of course my concern now is what to do with the laptop.  I tried to repair the branch files but the XP install CD said no to the repair copies.  I've backed up the data for most of the files and have had Geeksquad painfully back up the important image files of mine (ugh 99 bucks...)  So I could use a Windows reload CD I got for my Sony Laptop and just go from there... I just don't know if it would be worth it.  The rear laptop fan is already pert near busted and I have sites set on getting a new PC via Lenovo...

What to do, what to do.  Luckily I'm not poessesed by an Imajin right now....

I will say buy a new laptop if you can afford it.  It sounds like the one you have is on life support.

Geeksquad
Sony

Ugh. Two things that shouldn't get anywhere near a laptop.  (A Sony optical drive is fine for a desktop, however.)

I say reload Windows.  It doesn't cost you anything more but time and effort.  Plus problems with config or system can come back weeks later with more strange actions.

Lenovos aren't bad; we have them at work. They are surprisingly very resilient and well made, despite being sparse on bells and whistles.  But if you're lookin for a cheaper replacement route, alot of places now have laptops starting at 299.  Decent, reliable ones like Toshibas and Compaqs, too.  Its a shame you had to put a third of that down on Bleaksquad.

Two rules everyone reading this thread needs to do if they haven't already:

1) Learn how to repair your PC or make friends with someone who can.
This means fixing hardware and software problems.  Friends will not take your money to fix your PC unless they need it to buy you new parts.  Geeksquad and Firedog are not your friends: they just prey upon people that don't follow this rule.  Online friends do not count: you need someone able to diagnose your problems firsthand.

2) Get an external hard drive for backup purposes.
Ask Santa if you have to, just don't leave 2007 without one.  They are sufficiently large and affordable enough now to make backing up everything you hold dear worth the cost.  Trust me, you'll sleep better at nights knowing your data is immediately recoverable, and entirely so up to the time of your last backup.  (I personally recommend the Western Digital brand, since they can be formatted as NTFS while most only support FAT.)

Well I have reloaded Windows, the problem is its fan is being even more annoying, Plus since its a laptop, and the CD used was a professional XP from 2001 some things are missing.  I'm getting problems with downloading as well as I need to obtain the service packs.

The big problem is the Fan.  I am not finding very many fans for a Vaio PCG FRV37 at this moment.  I may have to perform a burial.  I am seeing alot of good word from my Comp afficando friend who suggested the place to me.   My dad has a Lenovo laptop too.  The big problem is money.  I may be asking my folks for money to pay for this and then pay them back.  Hell I owed more than this with my last two terms of Grad School to my mom and I paid her back in full.

I feel real bad about this too.  I think my laptop had a good run of four years and may need to be put to pasture.  At least I have all of my important files right now.

Completely agree with these two rules.  Alot of computer problems can be solved with just a little ingenuity and know how.  Besides if its Windows, rebooting fixes the problem half the time anyway.
