Title: Who remembers the classic Animes?
Post by: KernelSanders on July 01, 2008, 08:21:23 pm
Akira (the Anime that got me started pretty much)..... badass movie about biker gangs and goverment telekenetic experiments with unwilling/unwitting civilians to make super weapons (or oh noes weapons of mass dis-truck-shun)
Guyver..... who remembers Guyver? Anybody? The weird guy with the jewel in his head that made him invincible, basically?

Classic anime for me has always been Doraemon.  I've never seen Akira.

Akira is pretty awesome. Kaneda rules in that movie.

So classic animes in what regard?  Cause I think Gundam is a classic anime but it didn't "officially" come over until recently.

I'm guessing you mean 80s-early 90s anime that was ported over here at the time (ala Thundercats, Voltron and Robotech which are all classics in my mind).

Good point.  If you asked me about classic anime without explaining what you meant I'd probably assume you mean stuff like Lupin III and Ashita no Joe.

I will say this: Voltron has a way cooler theme song than the anime it was chopped up from, Golion.  It has this cheesy opening with cheesy vocals that involve a japanese guy saying "One! plus one! plus one!" and every time he says one it sounds like Juan...

but the show still rules, because its still about a robot lion with a giant sword.

It IS much more violent in Japanese.

Well there was the episode where Ryo-oki was born from the remnants of her ship.  She pretended that the egg she had was the product of her and Tenchi getting busy in the sack.

Ranma was good up until Happosai became an integral part of the show, then it went all downhill for me.  Still my favorite fight sequence is the Ice Skating Battle.

I consider anything pre-1995 classic at this point.

I run a tumblr that makes mention of a lot of older anime and manga.  I just love the older stuff.  I love the hand drawn look of the artwork, the animation quality, the character designs.  Heck I even miss one shot OVAs for no reason.

There was something magical about 90s and 80s era Japan.

It goes without saying that was the golden era for entertainment in that country. From videogames, to comics, to television... it was a truly revolutionary period.

Whenever i think of anime from that time, Megumi Hayashibara's name springs to mind; she was in everything. Couldn't avoid her either even when playing import games :chicken

Moquin pretty much nails it. 80s and 90s were the best era. We got tons of gems those years:  Bubblegum Crisis (original, remake and the AD Police spin offs), Gall Force saga, most of the Gundams, Dangaioh, Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Evangelion, Slayers, Shamanic Princess, the Iczers, Akira, the old Ghibli movies, Escaflowne, Macross, Lodoss, VOTOMS, Dougram, Giant Robo, Hummingbird, Windaria, Dirty Pair, Outlaw Star, Layzner, Utena, The Five Star Stories...I could go on forever.

Those two decades also had the best artstyles, if you ask me.

I am watching VS Knight Lamune & 40 Fire (1996), which is pretty much coasting along on Kazuki Yao's performance as Da Cider at this point, but has its charm points, such as a great intro and Tsukasa Kotobuki's character designs being at the peak of their mid-90's exaggerated insanity.

Actually, I'd wanted to watch more of NG Knight Lamune & 40, the first series (1990), which I'd seen the first episode of a while ago - but it sure is a pain to pick up anything that was only partially fansubbed. They got up to episode 14 only, so since there isn't a "complete" batch to put up, it's impossible to get any of them. Super annoying.

Speaking of 80s, I've been watching a J-drama called "Blue Blazes" which is kind of about anime & manga in the 80's.  At least, if you have a love for it, you should definitely check it out.  I don't want to give too much away. haha!

Blazes Blue sounds like it might be a fun watch, but a J-drama from the 80s? I don't know anybody who watches those.

I might give it a watch in the future.

It's a recent show, it's just set in the 80's. Follows Kazuhiko Shimamoto's autobiographical manga. I still haven't seen it myself (stunningly, there's actually a boatload of promising stuff this anime season), but I've heard nothing but good things.

Apparently Shawne Kleckner (of Right Stuf) said something to the effect of looking into blu-ray recently. That's the big thing holding me back on anime purchases these days - Right Stuf and Discotek in particular have been putting out some pretty incredible stuff, but it's annoying knowing how many of them have obviously superior BDs stuck in Japan. If Right Stuf works it out, hopefully that'll mean we'll get some for Dirty Pair and Utena, which I've been holding off on for entirely too long.

A lot of the anime BDs in Japan are ridiculously overpriced.

The "produce less and charge more" mentality is just a plain awful strategy for reaching mass market :carreraflying

I need to watch Dragonball uncensored. I've only seen the TV edited version by Funimation (and the Harmony Gold version before that).
