Variable Geo Doujinshi Scanning Project
« on: August 15, 2005, 08:10:33 pm »

Way back in the day when people still made Variable Geo doujinshi, two official doujinshi anthologies were released for Variable Geo 1 and Variable Geo 2, titled Variable Geo Premium Anthology Comix and Variable Geo Super Premium Anthology.

Ever since I first got a copy of the Variable Geo doujinshi anthologies I've been wanting to scan them, and luckily I managed to acquire extra copies of each.  I got them in the mail yesterday, and started gutting and scanning them last night night.

From here on out I'll be posting updates of my progress until I'm finally finished scanning all 250 pages of each.  I don't think these have ever been scanned in their entirety before, and I'm mainly doing this because I'm a big Variable Geo fan and want other Variable Geo fans or at least people who are slightly interested in the series to check out these rare doujinshi.

I know that if these were around when I was first getting into Variable Geo it would have been friggin' awesome to find them, so I hope someone out there gets that kind of satisfaction out of this.

Right now I've finished gutting and am in the process of scanning the first Variable Geo doujinshi anthology, V.G. Max Premium Anthology.

Here's the cover:

Here's a sample chapter I scanned to show that I'm serious:

When I'm finished scanning all pages of the first anthology I'll upload them to the gallery.

Currently scanning:
Variable Geo Max Premium Anthology (252 pages, 31 stories)
60 pages have been scanned so far.
190 pages remaining.

Wow, scanning doujinshi... I could never bring myself to doing that... (mostly because my scanner still uses a parallel port and has a cover that weighs a ton, and I can't afford more than 1 copy of any of em)

Thanks to my super duper ninja powers I've finished a ton of scans since last update. =D

In total, I've got 191 pages scanned, and have only 61 more pages of VG Max to go.

Since I finished scanning and finalizing pages 1-124 I've started uploading them to the gallery.

Check it out:
Variable Geo Max Premium Anthology Comix

Variable Geo 2: Super Premium Anthology has been successfully gutted and is now being scanned on the side, particularly the uber sexy pictures and chapters. Don't worry, I intend to scan the whole thing, but in the meantime the cool doujin stories like the following have been making the whole process fun and productive.

Here's a preview of one of the doujin stories from VG Super Premium Anthology:

I've seen naked women do backbreakers, Terry Bogard, Jun Kubota in a maid outfit, Yuka Takeuchi pilot a mech, all of the V.G. warriors fusing into a single fighter (whose name is probably something like Yukaorimanajunho or something, lol burijetto) to fight Reimi, and a grand V.G. langerie battle royale since I've started scanning these comics, and I've got to say; scanning these have been a blast. =D

It's been a while, but I've picked this up again.

Right now I'm a little over halfway done with scanning all of the Variable Geo 2 doujinshi.  So far I've gotten 170 out of 250 pages done.  I must have scanned somewhere between 50-60 pages between last night and this morning.

Also, I noticed that the quality of some of my older scans could be better.

Here, I'll show you.  The following scan is raw, that is, exactly as a scanner would output it:

Example 1

This next scan is the same image, but with some modifications in order to make it look sharper and brighter:

Example 2

And there you have it.  In the second example, you can't see the texture of the paper like you can on the first, and overall it just looks better.  You might of noticed that the other Variable Geo doujinshi I scanned looks much like the first example.  I'm going to go back and take that one down, spruce it up a bit, and then reupload it.

As for the second Variable Geo doujinshi that I'm currently scanning, I'll modify it for clarity as well, but still keep a backup of a raw version just in case I find a better way to modify it.

It's official.  I've finished scanning, touching up, and finalizing the Variable Geo 2 doujinshi anthology.

Go to the gallery and go look at it/download it.

Could use a zip version though. Will save us time and patience.  Will save you loads on bandwidth by not having to serve up all that HTML and image overhead associated with gallery viewing.

Well, I do try to make this a happier place after all.  Hyperguy doesn't always catch on as quickly, though.

Thanks.  It took quite a bit of time to acquire, but I think it was worth it. =D

Could use a zip version though. Will save us time and patience.  Will save you loads on bandwidth by not having to serve up all that HTML and image overhead associated with gallery viewing.
On paper that's a great idea, but that'd take more resources than I'd be willing to allow.  The entire doujin's around 130 MB in file size it'd take double the amount of space on the server in order to have it in the gallery and as a downloadable zip file.  Compression would lower its file size, but not by much since the files have already been optimized.  I'd rather that 130 MB go to other CG and doujinshi, and there's not enough space on the server to mirror everything.

That, and more bandwidth would be used to host it as well.  While it's true that html and image overhead does use up some bandwidth for hosting the page the pictures on, it doesn't take anywhere near as much bandwidth compared to if the doujin was available as a large file.  I mean, you have to consider that thousands of people visit this site every month, and more bandwidth would be used quicker if they all downloaded 130 MB at a time instead of a few pictures at a time.

However, there are ways around these limitations that would be a nice compromise for both parties.

Like for example, download managers.  Though we wouldn't have enough bandwidth to support everyone downloading large files from the server at a time, since the majority of the visitors don't use download managers it'd be safe for a fair amount of people to use them.  This would allow someone to download an entire doujinshi or CG set within the same amount of time it'd take to download it as a large file, but with less strain on resources since the majority of the visitors don't use download managers.  There'd be jumps in bandwidth usage, but at least this way we wouldn't run out.

Then there's the extra features in the gallery that aren't very widely known.

Like the "download all of your favorites as a zip file" feature.  Everyone who has an account in the gallery has access to this feature.  As soon as they label an image as their favorite it gets stored in their account under the link labed "My Favorites" and they can later download all of their favorites as compressed in a zip file.

The catch?

They have to go through each image they want to download as a zip file and label them as a favorite in order for it to work, which takes almost as much time as saving each image individually.  To that effect, I could create dummy accounts for each gallery that already have all of the images selected as favorites so that people could log in and download entire galleries though.

Then there's this uber-experimental hack for Coppermine that would allow you to download an entire album as a zip, but I've heard that support for it is sketchy at best and that it can slow down the server to a startling halt if implemented incorrectly.  I'll look into it all the same.

In any case, I hear youse guys.  At the same time, I can't meet everyone's demands every time either.

I didn't mean for general consumption.  Just those of us that want it, but wish there were a quicker download method.  Hell, if I got a zip for it I'd host it for short time to let everyone else here get it.  Let all the newbies do tit the normal (slow) way.  Give us power users a secret option.

You're on to something there.  I wouldn't mind hosting zip files of galleries for a limited time so that power users would be able to download them quicker.

And by power users, I mean people who contribute to the forum as opposed to all of the Belgium and Laotian people who only visit for porn, can't read what I post anyhow, and leave.

Would you like to be in charge of such an operation?  I can provide the hosting, permissions, and ninja monkeys.

you can get a free rapidshare folder, and load your zips to there

that way you can save yourself the bandwith all together, and give us a faster download method

sounds like a win/win to me

AND you can pasword the folder so that only the folks you want in there can get in

Seconded.  I don't beleive I ever got around to downloading this before it left my mind.

Hyperguy, if you're concerned about bandwidth, post on Rapidshare or make an e-hentai gallery.

Since this is original content, this is something I wouldn't mind using bandwidth for.  I'm strongly opposed to putting anything on e-hentai because I don't like their points system at all.

Anywho, I'm working on putting this up again right now, in the G'alajerie Non'sistaunt.  It allows for gallery viewing and zipped downloads(though I think I'll end up restricting zipped downloads to registered members).

The Gallery that doesn't ever exist ever has just received a fresh upload of both Variable Geo doujinshi anthologies.  The notgallery is super cool in that you can use the 'add to cart' feature to mass download images from galleries.

Go ahead and take advantage of mass downloading now because I'm going to restrict it to members in the future. O_o

Need a url to it?  Ha!  It's on this very page.  Can't do everything for ya!  Get to work!
