« on: February 12, 2009, 11:20:38 pm »
Was it ever discovered how to rip images from the old viper PC98 games?

Not that I know of.

Maybe fooling around with EditDisk would bring some insight as to how possible it is.

Though, I have seen gifs made from Animahjong, so I suspect there's gotta be some way to extract them.

A screen capturing application is properly the most feasible way its being done now.  EditDisk helps to swap files (so that a particular animation plays early, instead of having to play though alot of games to get to it)

I've done several searches over the years on the filename extensions used in the Animahjong and other early Sogna PC98 games but have yet to find a Susie or Grapholic filter for them.  Stuff that old often had a Westside dedicated app to rip CG, but I've never found one for these games.  Anyone that can supply either the plugin filters or a standalone app to rip files from AMX, AMV3, or other early Sogna games will get +10 rep on the spot.

perhaps I could help out with the file formats....
but I'd have to get my hands on all the files first...
emulators and stuff...

http://emumax.uuu9.com/download/search.aspx?field=2&classid=174&keyword=sogna for several games.  Beware all the links to download spyware crap.  Click the preview picture to go to the page summary page.  Near the bottom will be a page to take you to a download page.  There's three buttons on that page that look like download links but will try to install spyware.  The actual game link is in text below those buttons.

I recommend Anex86 as the emulator and EditDisk to extract files from the hard drive or floppy disk files.  If you can't find them let me know and I'll put them in the Tools thread.

Okay, I found both apps now, and downloaded a game... I'll let you know what my research turns up.

They look like an old version of the ANM file format... wait...scratch that..

does the PC-98 have the same byte-order as Intel computers(Little Endian)??

wow... the grouping may be different... but i'm not entirely sure....
Code: (FIC.SZH MSV format) [Select]
Typical Hexadecimal grouping
10000000 8F000000 08F00000 008F0000 0008F000 00008FF8

If it's different, it could be...
1
00000008F
00000008F
00000008F
00000008F
00000008F
It's kinda abnormal, but this is only from early speculation

just trying to get this going again...
quite difficult... the byte order is Little Endian...

The SGS.DAT file, was simple enough to figure out,
basically the same as their DAT archive in recent games...

Just trying to differentiate the files.. from each other...

On another note.. i now know why it's called SGS..
"Super Game System"....  which i've called it Sogna Game System, for quite the many years now. :_(

At some point last year I took a look at the PC98 file formats and couldn't make any sense of the.  It's certainly not like .ANM.

If you can figure out how to extract the files for PC98 CTR, then maybe that'll be a good first step toward extracting the files for the earlier games, which all use a different format than SGS.DAT.  I'd -really- like to figure out the format so I can convert BTR to Windows.
