Chrono Trigger to be released on Nintendo DS
« on: July 05, 2008, 03:03:15 am »
A teaser site was released for the upcoming Nintendo DS port of Chrono Trigger:

http://na.square-enix.com/ctds/

Honestly folks, with Disgaea and Chrono Trigger both slated to come out in the 4th Quarter, there's no better time for RPG fans to own a Nintendo DS.  Gameboy Advance kept 2D alive with new games and 16-bit ports, but now DS advances into legend by adding two of the finest RPGs of this generation and the last to the system's library.

New features for the DS version include touch screen functionality, wireless play, and a new dungeon.

Don't forget that DS remakes of Final Fantasy IV (July 22nd) and Dragon Quest IV (September 16) are coming up this year, too.  And with Tactics Advance A2 already out, Square-Enix is really hitting our wallets hard this year.

Personally, Squeenix has a hard sell for me.  I played the game a few times on SNES and such, and I just can't see spending another $30 on the game.  I want Squeenix to stop emptying their nostalgia bank and come out with something truly unique for once.

They already did.  It's called The World Ends With You, and you should feel ashamed for not having played it.

One of these days I'll get a DS.

Just like one of these days I'll finish Disgaea's storyline.

Or Pokemon Crystal.

. . .

One of these days.

And with Tactics Advance A2 already out, Square-Enix is really hitting our wallets hard this year.

I may have spoken too soon.  Just shy of six hours in and I'm seeing major problems in playtesting and game balance.

Take for example the Camoa Cup quest.  You can sign up for it after just a few quests under your belt (I think I had six, might be able to do it in as few as three.)  There's no indication its going to be hard.  But then they slap a no magic restriction on you that the enemies don't follow (unlike earlier FFT games where enemies had to abide by laws, too) and suddenly you can't heal or damage multiple foes at a time.  And if that isn't a challenge enough, they then pit you 6 against 15.  That's way too early in the game to frustrate the player with a no-win scenario.  Sloppy.

So to get better, you take other quests to improve your skills.  Again, crazy laws are created just to take away the greatest advantage you could possibly have in that match.  You expect that, but then the game will find a way you make you break the law and lose the quest.  Law says you can't attack any enemy more than 1 space away?  Enemy will undoubtedly charm your black magic user and then you're hosed.  Take away the black magic skill from your characters so you're physical-attacks-only?  Game will give you critical hits every god damn time (trust me, I did it in three attempts at the Negotiation I quest in a row), which knocks the enemy back and for some reason that counts as an attack from two spaces away, even though it really wasn't. Hosed again.

Worst $40 Square has gotten out of me since FF8.  Go play the first FFTA for a better gaming experience.

Dude, the quest log shows the rank of the missions, the Comoa Cup being 19. I only take missions that underrank the next story mode mission, that way its on par with my characters. And not breaking laws isn't necessary to complete the quest, you just get some random goods afterwords, which you can obtain at any other point in time. Though I will say some of the laws suck ass, and it annoys me that enemies dont have to worry about the laws too. the law system in FFTA was much easier to exploit. :P

laws in ffta weren't very hard on the enemies either.  I once forced the boss of a mission to acquire 6 yellow cards and was no better off for it.  sure, they may have followed the laws (sometimes), but they never really got in trouble if they broke them.

Well I finally got past Negotiation I by positioning a character behind the enemy each time so that the criticals my attacks kept doing (still did 2 in the match) didn't knock back the dreamhares.  The other stat raising quests were far tamer.  Completed the Tomato quest and feeling a little better about the purchase now that those back-to-back quests that bothered me so much are out of the way.

will the ds version have those annoying anime cutscenes and voice overs that plagued the psx version?

Since none of the cutscenes from the PSX version have been shown I'm guessing it'll be a port of the SNES version.

It's certainly possible for them to include them given advances in storage space, but since that'd mean even more work I'm guessing they'll opt not to.

More info's been added to the official site.

Looks like it's MSRP'll be $39.99, and suprisingly it'll include 2 player Wi-Fi play.
