Mugen is the best 2D fighting game ever to be made because you create with the characters and boards you want.

This is cruel, but needs to be said.

Mugen is a nice idea, but sadly it will always fail because anyone with a decent idea or the drive to implement it will do so with a more powerful and versatile engine. Mugen is destined to be forever mired in a sea of user-created trash, with all the decent characters being ripped from other games. I wish this were not true, but it is the fate of an otherwise promising concept.

It doesn't help that after the WinMugen beta was leaked (it was intended to be a gift to those who made donations), Elecbyte was all "fuck you guys" and disappeared forever, with any chances of making it better gone with them. Not to mention the Mugen community in general is pretty nutty.

"HEY! DON'T STEAL MY MUGEN CHARACTER SPRITES WHICH I STOLE FROM ANOTHER GAME"

Needless to say, with this kind of attitude about everything, project quality hasn't increased as much as it could've over the years. They blacklist people who so much as borrow a frame of animation. :s

Customization --

http://www.streetmugen.com/

I used to have over 400 characters but I formatted... I would've added other links but that's all I can remember from the back of my mind right now. Sorry.
